ME 379 Thermal Fluid Laboratory - Class Information
1.

OBJECTIVES

A.
To study through experimentation the principles of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer within the context of engineering applications.

B.
To develop laboratory procedure, safety, and skills.

C.
To apply knowledge of engineering thermal-fluid principles and instrumentation to new problems.

2.

PREREQUISITES

A.
COMP 270     Tech Writing for Engineers

B.
ME 325     Thermal Fluid Sciences I

C.
ME 349     Instrument and Measurement Systems

3.

COREQUISITES

ME 375     Thermal Fluid Sciences II

4.

ORGANIZATION

A.
Attendance of laboratory is essential since you will be graded upon your lab performance. If you do miss lab, obtain information and notes from fellow classmates.

B.
First hour of laboratory will be recitation, involving review of thermal-fluid principles as well as discussion of equipment.  Remaining lab hours will be performing lab experiments.  It is crucial that the student prepare before the lab.

C.
Approximately first two-thirds of semester will involve previously planned experiments.  The last third of semester will involve one student-planned experiment.

GRADING

The distribution of credit is as follows:

                Weekly Laboratory Reports        45%
                Exam                                          15%
                Project                                        35%
                Attendance                                   5%

7.

LABORATORY REPORTS

A.
Lab reports should be completed before lecture on the date specified. Students are expected to understand all aspects of the experiment and report even though the experiment and report are completed as a group.  Simply copying from other students' reports, will reduce a student's ability to do well in the class.  Understanding the principles of the experiment may require a student to review notes from previous courses.

B.
Each lab group will be composed of four/five students and each member of the group is expected to contribute equally to the collective efforts.  The reports must mention the description and percent efforts of each group member.

Electronic copies of all reports must be submitted with hard copies on a CD.

8.

EXAM

Closed book and closed notes.  Exam will be related to the experiments performed and class lectures.

9.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is mandatory.  No makeup for the lab experiment or the exam will be given except in cases such as documented illness and similar reasons, otherwise a failing grade is given for that missed exam or lab experiment.

DISABILITY SERVICES

The University will make reasonable accommodations for persons with documented disabilities.  Students need to register with Disability Resource Services (DRS) every semester they are enrolled for classes.  DRS is located in Counseling &
Support Services, 2157 UC.  To be assured of having services when they are needed, students should register no later than the 3rd week after the first day of classes.
