CIS 487/587 Assignment 2
Fall 2019

For your second project you will need to design and implement a complete 2D computer game. You may create any type of game you wish and implement it on any platform approved by me in advance. I expect undergrads to use Unity. Your game needs to have reasonable storyline for its genre. Your game will need to make use of multimedia components in a non-trivial manner. You will find it easiest to do some type of arcade game based on the Unity 2D materials. You will need to have it running during our 2D Game Festival on 10-30-19. If you are an undergraduate student you must work with a partner. Graduate students may work by themselves, but may work with a partner if you develop a presentation on a game topic approved by the instructor. Students need to give me the name of their partner by e-mail no later than Wednesday, 9-25-19.

This assignment will give you an opportunity to begin work on the specification and design for your game. Your game does not have to be original, but should not copy an existing game. To receive full credit your game pitch document will need to contain non-trivial sections as defined below.

Executive Summary

- Abstract of game story

Game Play Look and Feel

-  Appearance

- Player roles and actions

-   Strategies and motivations

-  Level summary/story progression

Development Specification

-  Hardware

-   Software

-  Algorithm Style

Your write up should be 5 to 10 pages long. On 10-16-19 we will break up into small groups and you will conduct walkthroughs of your team's game pitch document and have people test your initial game prototype. You will have to upload your team document and prototype to Canvas. Students will review them on line and provide feedback. I will provide a paper form to collect your ratings and comments if you do not have access to canvas for some reason. I will assign reviewers and you may either use the canvas rubrics or upload the forms to canvas. Audio is not required for this project, though power point is preferred for the design document. The authors of the game product are expected to send me a list of the people who gave them meaningful reviews and the people who gave them valueless reviews. Partners are expected to evaluate the partner’s effort as well as their own by scoring them (0=nothing, 5=a lot) and providing a list of tasks you each completed. These participation reports need to be uploaded to canvas.
